PLACES I BUY DVDs

Deep Discount DVD has the best prices on domestic DVDs, free shipping, and does not charge sales tax to California.

Xploited Cinema imports European DVDs and has fabulous fast and friendly service.

DVD Empire has prices nearly as good as Deep Discount DVD, and carries some titles DDD doesn't.

Amazon UK Amazon Germany and Amazon France will ship to the USA using the same Amazon account you signed up for at Amazon US. You can even buy used items from their boards, often at phenomenal discounts.

GENERAL FILM NEWS AND CHAT

The DVD Savant column at DVD Talk is worth reading every time.

The rest of the site is fairly generic, although the Silent DVD column is also useful. Mondo Digital is updated infrequently, but offers very perceptive reviews of obscure films on DVD.

GENRE FILM NEWS AND CHAT

DVD Drive-In has news and reviews of genre movies on DVD. DVD Maniacs is a review site with a web board. I read this about once a week but rarely post there.

"ART" FILM NEWS AND CHAT

Criterion Forum is a web board which originally focused on the Criterion line of discs, but now covers art film DVD producers in general. Great source of news about upcoming art films on DVD. Masters Of Cinema is a news/review site focused on contemporary and classic art films.

BOUTIQUE DVD LABELS - USA

Blue Underground had a multi-year run issuing obscure films of all kinds. Rumor is they are scaling back now, but the bulk of their catalog is still available.

Casa Negra is devoted exclusively to Mexican horror and fantasy films, an area which has otherwise been largely ignored on DVD. Criterion is Criterion. If not for them, we might not have films on home video in their proper aspect ratios.

Dark Sky Films has a varied catalog, with an emphasis on vintage horror/SF and noir.

Fantoma has obscurities from Coffin Joe to Kenneth Anger.

Kim Stim has a small but varied catalog of art and exploitation films.

MPI is the parent company of Dark Sky Films. Their non-Dark Sky catalog contains a few items of interest. Retromedia has a large catalog of vintage and contemporary genre films of all kinds.

The Roan Group has a wonderful catalog of 30s-50s vintage Hollywood and Poverty Row films in excellent transfers and very low prices.

Severin issues excellent transfers of 70s/80s-era European erotica.
